Marc Davis, writes in AOL Health:
You go to the dentist with a severe toothache. An examination and an x-ray reveals that you'll need root canal work. Those two words -- root canal -- may needlessly evoke visions of excruciating pain and long hours in the chair. Long ago, root canal work may have been painful, but those days are gone. New techniques and very effective anti-pain medications have made the procedure much easier and virtually painless, says Dr. Christopher Wenckus, head of the Department of Endodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Dentistry.
If your dentist tells says you need root canal work, here are 10 questions to ask about the procedure. More @ AOL Health

How failing to clean your teeth twice a day can give you a heart attack
One more Post on the last posted story from Daily Mail :
Brushing your teeth twice a day could save you from a heart attack.
Scientists say those who fail to keep their teeth clean have a higher chance of suffering heart problems.
It is well established that having gum disease makes you more prone to heart disease, but this is the first time a link has been made with brushing habits.
A study found that those who never or rarely brush their teeth are 70 per cent more likely to suffer heart disease than those who brush twice a day.
Previously, researchers have found that poor dental hygiene and bleeding gums can allow up to 700 types of bacteria to get into the bloodstream, increasing the risk of a heart attack regardless of how healthy the person is...................

Healthy gums, healthy heart?
People who don't brush their teeth every day have a higher chance of developing heart disease, researchers have found. Lack of brushing can lead to constant, low-level gum infections, which researchers think could cause inflammation in the body and play a part in causing heart disease.

Fad diets are playing havoc with your smile
From Cosmetic News Portal :
This year’s National Smile Month campaign slogan, ‘Teeth4Life’, highlights the importance of looking after your teeth and maintaining them for life, whilst also stressing that a healthy diet can improve the quality of your life. To celebrate this year’s National Smile Month (May 16th-June 16th 2010) campaign sponsor, Oral-B, has commissioned nationwide research in partnership with the British Dental Health Foundation, to help encourage the nation to brush up on oral hygiene to ensure Brits keep their ‘Teeth4Life’.
Highlighting the state of the nation’s smiles and attitudes to oral health, the survey investigates everything from how long people really brush for, to the knowledge about basic oral health facts. And in the run up to the World Cup, the report also reveals which football player the nation thinks has got the best and worst smile, and which summer diet is actually the most damaging for your teeth.
The British Dental Health Foundation and Oral-B research shows that people don’t understand that a smile can actually be a barometer of your overall wellbeing, and that a good oral care routine has potential health benefits beyond just your teeth and gums. Dr Nigel Carter, Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation says; ‘Oral health is often seen as of secondary importance to general health - around 85% of people are completely unaware of the link between the health of the mouth and the health of the body. This year’s National Smile Month Theme: Teeth4Life will highlight the importance of maintaining and looking after the health your teeth throughout life.’
Luckily as summer approaches 60% of Brits understand that fad diets like the Maple Syrup Diet are going to play havoc with their smiles. However most people mistakenly think that red wine is worse for their teeth than white- incorrect! Research shows that red wine can actually ward off tooth decay (due to the chemicals in it that stop harmful bacteria sticking to teeth), and it is in fact white wines like Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay that can be the most staining to teeth, as they actually wear away the protective enamel.
Shockingly a third of us think that nothing serious will happen to us if we neglect our gums, whereas research has linked gum disease to potential risk of heart disease, diabetes, strokes, premature births, low birth-weight babies, and even infertility.
Definitely time for Brits to brush up on their oral health knowledge! Furthermore the survey shows that people think you should only brush your teeth for around 30 seconds, when dentists recommend a minimum of 2 minutes every morning and evening.
Celebrity dentist and Oral-B ambassador Dr Phil Stemmer recommends using a power brush to ensure his patients brush for the optimum 2 minutes of time: “It is shocking that the National Smile Month research has revealed that people are only brushing their teeth for 30 seconds. To really ensure you brush for long enough, try the Oral-B PC Triumph 5000 with SmartGuide which not only times how long you brush your teeth for but also encourages better brushing habits. The SmartGuide display helps to prevent common problems like brushing too hard, not brushing for long enough and unequal brushing.”
The National Smile Month survey also reveals that over a quarter of people in the UK (26%) are damaging their teeth by brushing just after breakfast, while an astonishing 38% assume they should brush their teeth after every single meal for optimum oral health. Dr Phil Stemmer recommends brushing before eating,: “The enamel that coats the outer layer of our teeth is temporarily softened by acidic foods, such as fruit”, he explains.“Brush first thing in the morning before breakfast- and once more in evening at least half an hour after eating.”
In the football smile stakes, Cheryl Cole was voted the pearly queen, having the best celebrity WAG smile, whereas Rooney’s ankle injury has clearly left him down in the mouth - he has been voted the footballer with the worst smile, even compared to famously buck-toothed Ronaldinho.
Oral – B are the experts in oral care and as the number one brand recommended by UK dentists, passionately believe in helping the nation to brush up on their oral hygiene for healthier, confident smiles.

Older people urged to take care of their teeth and gums
From Cosmetic Dentistry Guide :
Oral health is extremely important for everyone; however, research has shown that it is particularly important for older people.
Older people are at a higher risk of developing serious oral health conditions and studies have shown that many people over the age of 65 start to pay less attention to their oral health and stop visiting the dentist on a regular basis. Neglecting oral health in the short-term can cause more complex problems in the long-term, as existing conditions get worse and often require emergency treatment. Emergency dental treatment is more expensive and puts a strain on both dental and emergency medical services.
Many studies have now confirmed a link between the bacteria which cause oral health conditions, including gum disease and a number of serious medical health conditions. Poor oral health has been found to contribute to diabetes and an increased risk of strokes and cardiovascular disease.
Dr Lawrence Singer, of the Connecticut State Dental Association, said that many older people neglect their oral health at the very time they should be paying more attention to their teeth and gums. Dr Singer advises older patients to maintain their oral hygiene routine and arrange to see their dentist at last once a year. There are now many health and dental plans, which are targeted at older people and offer comprehensive cover for both NHS and private care.
dental insurance plans can help to limit the cost of dental treatment, which can mount up if the patient requires a lot of work. Regular check-ups will ensure dentists can monitor the progression of existing conditions and treat them before they get any worse. Plans are available for a very small monthly payment and there is a range of different policies to suit everyone.

Grow Dental Implants in Your Mouth
Dentistry has traveled a long way since time immemorial to this age of Computer.
When an Adult loses a full grown tooth there were only 2 options – Dentures or dental implants. Not any more. Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center have pioneered a technology that may allow us to regrow our own teeth, in our own mouths. The technique involves using stem cells to grow new teeth, and redirecting stem cells in the patient’s body to regenerate the tooth right where it was in the first place. Thus, Dental implants and fillings could become history.
A Dental Implant is employed, when a tooth cannot be saved, or in cases where a tooth is lost. If you have gaps in your smile where your teeth used to reside, Dental implants along with artificial teeth are often a good option to fill the gaps left by the tooth loss. However, the process of surgically inserting dental implants in a patient’s mouth is horrifying. Dentists, embed a cone shaped titanium screw directly into the jaw bone of the patient with the tooth attached on top. The process is painful and there is long healing process.
The findings by the Columbia University researchers represent the first report of regeneration of anatomically shaped tooth-like structures in vivo, and by cell homing without cell delivery. The potency of cell homing is substantiated not only by cell recruitment into scaffold microchannels, but also by the regeneration of periodontal ligaments and newly formed alveolar bone. The team of Columbia University researchers has also successfully grown teeth in Animal testing.
If the above method works, it would make little sense in the future to take care of cavities and other issues with fillings. Simply removing the tooth and growing it back may become the recommended course of action. This method allows the tooth to integrate itself with the surrounding tissues. This technology will also cut down on artificial materials in people’s mouths all over the world in the future.

Lowering Your Blood Sugar Level Using Dental Treatment
Read this interesting post for Diabetics from Diabetes Insider :
This is good news for people with diabetes. Recently, it was found that treatment for dental might lower blood sugar. It surely helps people with diabetes to reduce their blood sugar level without drugs. The research was announced on international Cochrane Collaboration as a part of it. The research was involving a scientist from UCL Eastman Dental Institute, Peninsula Dental School, and Ottawa University.
Well, it is surprising news but scientists in Edinburgh University have confirmed the study. They analyze when gum inflammation causing by bacteria occur, blood sugar in people with diabetes also rising. It because bacteria release some chemical that lessens the efficiency of insulin when infect gum.
When you go to a dentist to treat your teeth or gum, they will use some medicine or drugs to reduce inflammation on your gum. Reduce inflammation means to clean your mouth from bacteria and its chemical. This will shrink blood sugar level in people with diabetes, although the percentage is not big.
It makes a new gate between doctors and dentists to collaborate observing this discovery to find a more effective diabetes cure. The leader of the team, Dr Terry Simpson assumes that diabetes and serious gum disease may be linked. Therefore, it really helps for people with diabetes to treat their disease by maintaining good dental health. It is also keep control their blood sugar by using insulin, drugs or medicine, and diet plan, which is the basic treatment for diabetic.

Many 'too busy for a proper brush' of their teeth
Read this BBC story below:
One in three adults in the UK do not brush their teeth for the recommended full two minutes per day, experts believe.
The British Dental Health Foundation found a third cut brushing short to deal with more pressing matters.
Excuses given by the 1,000 adults polled included rushing to leave the house on time, as well as answering mobile phones or caring for children.
Experts stressed good brushing is essential to prevent tooth decay.
Chief Executive of the Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter said: "Your dentist can remove any build-up of plaque and tartar on your teeth, but everyday care is vital and is down to the individual.
"Your toothbrush is one of the best weapons against gum disease."
He said many studies over the years had shown that the average time we brush our teeth for is only around 45 seconds, less than half of that necessary to do a good job.
"Yet our study shows people think they are doing considerably better than this," he said.
"Gum disease is the largest cause of tooth loss in adults, and poor oral health is being linked to more and more serious illnesses such as strokes and diabetes, but it is a preventable condition, and a good oral health routine at home is key to preventing it."
Experts advise people to brush their teeth for a full two minutes twice a day, with fluoride toothpaste to keep the mouth clean and healthy.

Cavity gravity: Healthy dental care for kids
Read the following post from Easier Lifestyle
As parents, we are very aware of the need to educate our children about dental hygiene but how often does this extend beyond twice daily brushing? And are you really aware of what damage is done to their teeth throughout the day?
In a recent survey of 286 dentists undertaken by the British Dental Health Foundation, sugary drinks were identified as the most significant factor in children’s tooth decay.
In the second half of 2008 there were 1.27 million fillings in children’s teeth in England and Wales.
According to the British Dental Health Foundation, foods and drinks containing sugar cause tooth decay, and drinks such as citrus fruit juices and all fizzy drinks can be harmful if taken often and in large amounts. Tooth decay and enamel erosion results in pain, discolouring, sensitivity and decay. Dentist-favoured alternatives are water or milk, because even fruit juices and squashes consumed in between meals can have a negative effect on teeth.
It is important to educate that a balance needs to be struck, but if they have already been exposed to sugary drinks, how can you help change their perceptions – and their habits?
The Natural Hydration Council believes children should be educated in the healthier alternatives and is supporting the British Dental Health Foundation’s National Smile Month campaign. ‘Teeth4life’ runs from 16th May to 16th June 2010 and is aiming to raise awareness of good dental practices.
So if you need some advice, log onto our live webTV show where Dr Nigel Carter, Head of the British Dental Health Foundation, will be offering his top tips on keeping your children’s teeth healthy, and exposing just how much damage their favourite sugary drinks could be doing.
Dr Nigel Carter will be live online at: studiotalk.tv/show/cavity_gravity on Monday 24th May at 4:30pm to discuss healthy teeth.

Improving The Look Of Your Smile
Read the following post by Jeffrey Laubmeier in The Lakewood Observer:
In today’s society, your appearance can have a dramatic effect on how you are perceived by others. In fact, it may be more important and meaningful to others than most realize. Studies have shown that your appearance influences how others perceive your health and vitality as well as your level of success. This includes the look of your smile, one of the most prominent features of your face. Cosmetic dentistry plays a large part in helping people improve their appearance, and recent advances in materials and techniques have made it easier and more affordable. Bondings, veneers, whitening, and braces are examples of dental treatments for improving your smile.
Composite bondings and porcelain veneers can alter the shape and color of teeth to help cover permanently stained, poorly shaped, or slightly crooked teeth. Bondings are typically completed in one appointment, whereas porcelain veneers usually require multiple appointments spread out over a couple of weeks. Recent advances in dental materials often make it possible for these treatments to be completed with little or no preparation of the tooth prior to their application.
If you are simply dissatisfied with the color of your teeth, then whitening may be the best option for you. Teeth can become discolored for many reasons such as age, tooth trauma, certain medications, and exposure to certain food, drinks, and tobacco. Whitening can be accomplished through several different methods: at home with over-the-counter (OTC) products, at home with dentist-dispensed products, and professionally applied in-office whitening. OTC products include whitening toothpastes that can help remove surface stains and bleaching products that may come in the form of trays, gels, or strips. Since these products are OTC there is a limit to how strong the bleaching agent can be and results may take longer to achieve. Products dispensed by a dentist are stronger than OTC products and therefore can usually achieve better results in a shorter time period. Also, when purchasing professional tooth whitening, the dentist will fabricate custom dental trays, molded from your mouth, which help to enhance the results by holding the bleaching agent tight against the tooth. Professionally applied in-office whitening utilizes the most powerful products and usually can achieve results in as little as an hour. With all whitening products, the most common side effect is tooth sensitivity. Sensitivity is usually short term, but can typically be avoided if the procedure is done under the supervision of a dentist.
Braces can reposition your teeth to correct crowded, tilted, and rotated teeth, or to close gaps between teeth. With improvements in materials and techniques the time needed to move teeth has shortened. And now, in some cases, one may even wear clear retainers instead of metal brackets so that no one will know you are undergoing orthodontic treatment.
One or a combination of the treatments mentioned above can dramatically improve the appearance of your smile. A whiter, brighter, more radiant smile can boost your confidence and improve how you feel about yourself. Talk with your dentist to see if any of these treatments are clinically appropriate for you. And always make sure to use American Dental Association accepted products.
Parents urged to teach children about dental health from birth
Oral health is extremely important, yet many parents are unaware of the dangers of poor oral health and are failing to teach their children good oral hygiene habits.
Children rely on their parents to look after their teeth and gums when they are too young to do it themselves and experts are encouraging parents to teach their children about oral health as early as possible. At first, this will involve brushing children’s teeth but when the children are older this should involve educating them about healthy eating, encouraging them to brush their teeth independently and taking them to visit their dentist on a regular basis.
Research has consistently shown that children that are taught to look after their teeth and gums from an early age are more likely to enjoy good oral health throughout their childhood and adult years. Children who are introduced to their dentist at an early age are also less likely to suffer from dental anxiety and dental phobia. Parents are encouraged to make the most of the great kid’s products on offer; many leading brands use children’s favourite television characters to decorate their products and this can make children excited about brushing their teeth.
Experts are also urging women to take care of their teeth and gums throughout pregnancy, as studies have shown that maternal gum disease can cause complications during pregnancy and childbirth and can cause premature birth and even stillbirth. NHS dental care is free for pregnant women and dentists recommend that expectant mothers attend at least one check-up during this time.

Parents play vital role in maintaining child's oral health
A study has shown that parents play a vital role in maintaining a child's overall health, and that educating mothers and families on oral health can help prevent early childhood tooth decay.
With all of the challenges that new parents face, they may not think much about the link between their child's oral health and overall health.
In fact, an understanding of oral hygiene can help parents to prevent tooth decay-the single most common chronic childhood disease in America-and to create a lifetime of healthy habits for their child.
"Ideally, the oral health education for any family will begin with prenatal education and the establishment of a dental home by the time the child is 12 to 18 months of age," Tegwyn Brickhouse, DDS, author of the study, said.
"Many people don't realize that the oral health of the mother affects both the infant's future oral health and the child's overall health. In fact, some studies show that periodontal disease has been linked to pre-term labour.
"That's why pregnant women should be evaluated for cavities, poor oral hygiene, gingivitis, loose teeth and diet," Brickhouse stated.

How flossing can save your life
We know it helps stop tooth decay – but new research shows that good oral care can prevent heart disease, diabetes and even dementia.
It's hard to be long in the tooth when you've got no teeth, because they've all fallen out. At least you don't have to remember to brush them – not because you don't have any teeth, but because you've lost your memory because your teeth have fallen out. And, anyway, you're more worried about the condition of your heart and your lungs; the risk of developing disease in your vital organs has increased, because your teeth have fallen out.
We all know to look after our teeth lest they become yellow and unhealthy and require painful trips to the dreaded dentist. But how many of us would take more care if we realised how much the state of our mouths can affect our overall health. "People think of the mouth as some kind of compartment that's independent from the rest of the body," says Ian Needleman, professor of restorative dentistry at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in London. "But that doesn't really make a lot of sense."
A study published last month suggests there could be a link between low tooth count, and poor memory. Scientists at the University of Kentucky in America put people aged between 75 and 90 through a test in which they were asked to recall 10 words they had been presented with five minutes earlier. All the participants, who repeated the test over three consecutive years, were from similar educational backgrounds, but there was variation in their results. People with fewer teeth scored lower than those with more teeth in the first test – and their scores declined far quicker thereafter.

National Smile Month: Time to grin and bare it
For the next four weeks football fans will be happy because the World Cup is on the way, just as other people are happy that the season has finished. We should all take advantage of this small window of glee, of course, but there is a serious reason behind National Smile Month’s celebration of showing off your pearly whites – oral health is vital.
The key messages of the British Dental Foundation’s campaign, Teeth For Life, are the ones that dentists drum into us at every check-up: brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.
And if you can’t remember the last time you were in a dentist’s chair, it’s about time you addressed the problem.
Dentists are now increasingly in the front line of healthcare as scientific research continues to prove a systemic link between gum disease and heart disease, strokes, diabetes and even premature babies.
Evidence of the first documented link between a foetal death and its mother’s pregnancy-related gum disease has emerged in the US. Elsewhere, cosmetic dentistry has seen a significant rise in recent years, bucking the economic trend, according to industry experts.

Adverse Dental Health Put Young Aboriginal Adults at Higher Chronic Disease Risk
Young Aboriginal adults have 2-11 times higher adverse clinical oral health outcomes than young Australian adults generally, according to research published in the Medical Journal of Australia.
Dr Lisa Jamieson, Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health at the University of Adelaide, and co-authors compared clinical oral health outcomes of a birth cohort of young Aboriginal adults in the Aboriginal Birth Cohort (ABC) study with those of their age-matched, nationally representative counterparts in the National Survey of Adult Oral Health (NSAOH).

Oral pleasure
How could something as simple as a plastic handle with nylon bristles become so complicated? Manual or electric? Compact, full or oval head? Throwaway or rechargeable? Sensitive, soft or medium? Sonic, oscillating or pulsating?
With choices now stretching the length of some drug store aisles, descriptions that make your head spin, prices that climb into the hundreds, and annual sales in the millions, isn’t it time for a toothbrush reality check?
"The toothbrush has been around for 5,000 years,” says Dr. Uche Odiatu, of Toronto’s Bayview Village Dental Associates. “The whole idea is meant to clean away food debris and plaque from your teeth. Prevention in dentistry is more cost effective than fixing things, and tooth brushing is a big part of that prevention.”

Gum disease treatment may help diabetes
Treating serious gum disease in diabetics can help to lower their blood sugar levels, a new study has found.
Edinburgh University scientists have found reducing gum inflammation in people with diabetes can help minimise complications with the condition.
It is thought when bacteria infect the mouth causing inflammation the chemical changes reduce effectiveness of insulin and raise the levels of blood sugar.

Dentists urged to come clean on medical bills
Another story related to last post .
patients are being left in the dark when it comes to the cost of basic medical and dental work.
Most patients only discover how much they are going to be charged by a dentist or doctor after their treatment.
Health workers are consistently refusing to openly display their prices and as a result customers are being charged wildly different amounts.
A new study by the National Consumer Agency (NCA) has found that nearly 70pc of dentists fail to show a price list either outside their premises or even in the waiting room.

Massive differences in dental and GP fees
MASSIVE DIFFERENCES in the fees charged by dentists and GPs have emerged in a survey which also shows that almost 70 per cent of dentists and half of doctors fail to display their prices.
Patients of one GP in Dublin 4 pay €70 for a consultation, twice the lowest fee, which is charged by a doctor in Co Kerry, the survey by the National Consumer Agency reveals.
The biggest cost variations are in dentistry, where fees charged for basic procedures in some parts of the State are almost four times the cheapest fee.
The cost of a simple tooth extraction varies from €40 to €150 depending on where you live, while a scale and polish ranges in cost from €25 to €90, according to the individual dentist.

Sedation Dentistry to help you

Sedation dentistry refers to a procedure that is used to provide a completely relaxed and anxiety-free experience for people who receive dental treatment. The process of Sedation dentistry essentially involves the use of pharmacological agents to relax a patient before or during a dental appointment. These pharmacological agents could be categorized as a class of drugs called sedatives. Sedatives, such as tranquillizers, depressants, anti-anxiety medications, nitrous oxide, etc, exert their influence by depressing the central nervous system, primarily those regions concerned with conscious awareness.
Today, Oral Sedation Dentistry is the commonest technique used in the United States and Canada to eliminate patient fears. This technique is quite easy and does not require needles. The best advantage of Oral Sedation Dentistry is that the medications create such a soothing and relaxed experience that most patients do not even remember the visit; it appears to them as if they had slept through the entire treatment. Oral Sedation Dentistry maintains a certain level of consciousness in the patient during the dental treatment procedure to ensure safety and cooperation. In most dental treatments, a local anesthetic is injected in the mouth, even when sedation dentistry techniques are being performed. The local anesthetic functions by temporarily blocking the pain impulses from the affected teeth and gum tissue.
Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
• Sedation dentistry offers numerous advantages to patients. One of the prominent advantages of Sedation dentistry is that patients quite often feel like their dental procedure lasted only a few minutes, when in reality it might have taken several hours to perform. Therefore, highly sophisticated and time-consuming dental procedures such as smile makeovers or rebuilding processes that generally require multiple visits could be performed in fewer appointments.
• In case you are hesitant to change the appearance of your smile because of your fear or anxiety about undergoing complex dental procedures, Sedation dentistry can make you feel really calm and comfortable during the entire treatment process and help you achieve a bright, healthy smile.
• As Sedation dentistry patients often receive recommended routine care, there are very less chances of patients neglecting their oral health.

Reconstructive Dental Surgery
Reconstructive Dentistry refers to different kinds of restorative dentistry processes that involve completely replacing or repairing broken or missing teeth, bones, or tissue. Reconstructive Dentistry may involve various types of procedures such as Full Mouth Reconstruction, Dental Implant Restorations, TMJ treatment, Dental bridge placement, Dental crown placement, Inlays and Onlays, and replacement of old metal fillings.

Certain factors such as poor oral hygiene, accidents or even heredity can trigger the need for Reconstructive dentistry. Severe medical problems such as overcrowding, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and jaw injuries may also necessitate Reconstructive dentistry procedures.
Full Mouth Reconstruction
Full Mouth Reconstruction is one of the most significant procedures in Reconstructive dentistry. Full Mouth reconstruction generally involves a good combination of cosmetic dentistry with the science of neuromuscular dentistry. Orthodontic equipments are used to properly position the jaw of the patient. Upon the proper alignment of the jaw, various cosmetic and Restorative dentistry procedures that include porcelain veneers, dental crowns, bridgework, dental implants, and onlays are completed.
Major dental problems
Severe dental problems such as damaged and worn teeth can have a lasting impact on the alignment of your teeth. A crown, dental bridge or a dental implant may be used depending on the extent of the damage caused to the teeth.
TMJ Syndrome
TMJ syndrome is a disorder that impacts the functioning of the jaw's temporomandibular joint, causing severe pain in head and neck and popping of the jaw when you chew food. In most cases, TMJ syndrome could be treated with over-the-counter pain medicines and simple jaw exercises. However, if dental problems still persist, your general dentist will have to perform more complicated procedures to relieve you of the pain and discomfort.
It is often a general dentist who performs many of these dentistry procedures, but you should make it a point to speak with the dentist before the treatment and view some of the samples of the doctor's previous full mouth reconstructions. Before planning to go in for Reconstructive Dentistry, it is always necessary to consult an experienced dentist or oral surgeon who will take your medical history, examine your mouth, and discuss the various options.

Importance of Oral hygiene

Good Oral hygiene plays an essential role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Infact, good Oral hygiene is vital for your entire well-being.
Here are some of the reasons why good Oral hygiene is very important:
Prevention of Oral Cancer:Maintaining good Oral hygiene prevents Oral cancer and other diseases.
Prevention of Gum Diseases: Gum disease refers to an infection of the gum tissues and bones and is one of the prominent causes of adult tooth loss. However, if diagnosed early, Gum diseases can be treated well.
Prevention of Plaque and calculus: Dental Plaque refers to a soft whitish deposit which settles on the surface of teeth. Dental Plaque forms as a result of bacteria combining with food and saliva. Calculus, or tartar, is hardened calcified plaque and it sticks strongly to the teeth. Dental Plaque and Calculus could be removed by practicing good oral hygiene.
Prevention of Tooth Decay :Tooth decay could be defined as the gradual breakdown of the tooth's enamel and the interior tissue that can result in cavities and, ultimately, the complete loss of the teeth. One of the main causes of tooth decay is the accumulation of plaque. The bacteria present in the plaque take in sugar from the food residue in the mouth and inturn, excrete lactic acid. The lactic acid becomes part of the plaque layer. The plaque must be removed or else, the acid can dissolve the tooth's enamel and inflame the entire gum tissue.
Maintainenance of good Physical Health: According to recent studies, heart attacks and strokes have been associated with gum diseases, resulting from poor oral hygiene.
Prevention of Bad Breath: Bad breath or ‘halitosis’ is the result of poor oral hygiene.
Prevention of oral cavities: One of the main reasons to practice good Oral hygiene is to prevent oral cavities.
Here are a few steps to maintain good oral health:
• Do brush and floss your teeth daily.
• Do visit your dental professional regularly.
• Eat a proper, well-balanced,healthy diet.
• Avoid smoking.
• If you are pregnant, eat healthy, nourishing food and always try to maintain good oral health.

Why Dental Implant becomes necessary?

The process of Dental implant is mainly used to replace a missing tooth. This surgical procedure involves the insertion of a titanium pin, that is hollowed out inside, in the jawbones of a patient.
When the patient has completely recovered, a metal piece is directly screwed into the inserted pin. A tooth implant is placed on the metal piece, also known as an ‘abutment’ and the Dental implant procedure is, finally, completed.
A Dental implant, indeed, has its own cosmetic benefits. One of the best advantages of a Dental implant is that it can give the person a greater sense of self-esteem when he or she smiles, at the same time it can also lend a certain brightness to the smile by making it appear more natural and healthy looking.
Besides cosmetic advantages, a Dental implant offers numerous significant benefits. One or more dental implants can be used to replace a bridge or partial denture. Dental implants are comparatively more durable, long- lasting, has greater strength and do not move like a partial denture or bridge. Adhesives are not required in the case of dental implants. In short, the use of dental implants is far more comfortable for the patient.
However, there are certain cases where Dental implants will prove to be a failure. In some instances, the bone can grow around the region where the Dental implant has been done. If the implant is poorly placed, it could become loose or fall out. Or, if the patient has insufficient oral hygiene practices, it could lead to infection. Certain serious medical conditions can subsequently create problems with Dental implants. If the abutment loosens, the tooth implant can either break or fall out.
Dental implants could be used for full or partial dentures. If the patient is in need of gum and bone restoration procedures or has serious dental problems that must be addressed prior to the placement of Dental implants, the patient may have to incur high costs .However, one of the disadvantages of Dental implants is that they are not covered under dental insurance plans and therefore, the entire process has to be financed.
