You go to the dentist with a severe toothache. An examination and an x-ray reveals that you'll need root canal work. Those two words -- root canal -- may needlessly evoke visions of excruciating pain and long hours in the chair. Long ago, root canal work may have been painful, but those days are gone. New techniques and very effective anti-pain medications have made the procedure much easier and virtually painless, says Dr. Christopher Wenckus, head of the Department of Endodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Dentistry.
