Saving smiles

The visit to the pediatrician often has a similar routine. The doctor checks height, weight, eyes and ears to make sure a child is developing.

But some public health programs and educators say health care professionals should be looking at one other developing area – the mouth.

Last week, a dental hygienist and speaker touted the importance of focusing on oral hygiene with children to a group of pediatric professionals. During a presentation at Auburn Memorial Hospital, Laurie Turner said pediatricians should be working with families to address their young children’s teeth to prevent health issues down the line.
